![]() ![]() It's pleasant at first but by the time you reach the bottom of the tub you are a little sick of it and are feeling very unsatisfied. If you are like me you'll find this book eating a tub of cotton candy. I mean they are fine enough for one book but spending a series with them does not seem like a pleasant experience. The main character are a little grating and unlikable. Things start to get repetitive towards the end as the story just starts to tread water. The problem is the premise of this book, while clever, is not substantive enough to maintain a 17 book series or whatever the heck the Ian has planed. And it's not even fair to call it a triumph as it doesn't change anything in the world. Their big "triumph" is more of an accident then any action of the characters. The character end up in the exact same place they started. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, gets resolved in this book. ![]() It is well written with interesting ideas and fun, if somewhat small, fictional world. I would have given this book a perfect score if it wasn't the first part in an apparently very long series. ![]()

Milk is a recurring motif throughout the book: for example, the mother fears that she will poison her daughter if she breastfeeds, and the girl grows to be lactose intolerant. There’s a stark quality to Nora Ikstena’s prose (in Margita Gailitis’ translation) that really heightens the intensity of her subject matter. She takes her daughter to live with her, hoping to grow closer to her – but depression continues to overshadow the mother’s life. She gives birth to a daughter in 1969, but struggles with the prospect of being a mother: she disappears for five days immediately following the birth, and remains distant from her daughter, who is brought up mostly by her grandmother and step-grandfather.Īll this changes, however, at the turn of 1977/8, when the mother has a run-in with the Soviet bureaucracy which ends with her being sent to run an ambulatory station in the Latvian countryside. The mother is born in Riga in 1944 and becomes a talented doctor, offered a position to study in Leningrad. ![]() ![]() ![]() Two unnamed first-person narrators alternate: a mother and daughter. ![]() Today I’m looking at a book from Latvia, the first title in Peirene‘s ‘Home in Exile’ series for 2018. ![]() ![]() ![]() Already they had been unfortunate enough as to have nearly half a dozen axles snap apart from their respective wheels.
